Fashion: Look Book
MAX TAN FW10
Thursday, September 2nd, 2010
Equal parts Helmut Lang, Yohji Yamamoto and Catwoman, the FW10 collection by Singapore-based designer Max Tan is extraordinary. Loyal to black and white and topped off with Maison Michel-esque cat-eared hats/masks, beautiful draping and tailoring also contribute to the stunning lineup—best described as androgynous and minimalist, with a clear emphasis on proportion.
It seems several Asia-based designers were instrumental in establishing the minimalism trend the fashion world is currently embracing; consistently turning their backs on body-con, overly-edgy, show-all-of-your-skin clothing, their unique, oft-avant-garde creations helped steer trend in a new direction. Max Tan is a prime example. While the line’s clothing may appear simple at first sight, in reality, it’s anything but. Plays on proportion, geometry and volume make the FW10 collection a standout; my fave pieces included are an architectural white blouse that was shown paired with superbly-draped black harem pants, and a voluminous white dress cinched with a black obi belt. Perfect. On another note, I LOVE that the lookbook was photographed in a skate park. How rad is that?
