We Are Stalking: Katy Atlas of Sugarlaws

Katy Atlas is living the sweet life. No, really. Since launching her foodie blog, Sugarlaws, over two years ago, Katy has joined the ranks of such food-meets-fashion bloggers (and C40 favorites) as Emily of Cupcakes and Cashmere and Ji Kim of Luxirare. Thanks to her mission of bringing wearable styles to the everyday woman, Katy has gained a large following, and has even caught the attention of of-the-moment designer Rebecca Minkoff. Whether she is attending a designer’s exclusive event or a private showing of a store’s latest merch, Katy is in high demand and can often be found jet-setting around the country. Recently, she opened up to C40 about her style tricks, her cravings and her love for another C40 fave, Lindsey Calla of Saucy Glossie—and proved to me that a little ingenuity can go a long way.

C40. What inspired your concept of incorporating food into your fashion blog? Did other bloggers like Emily from Cupcakes and Cashmere or Ji Kim from Luxirare inspire you?

KA. Both of those blogs were (and still are) hugely inspiring to me!  I’d been blogging about food and recipes for over two years when I started to incorporate fashion posts, and I was looking for a new way to challenge myself.  It was a great way to shake things up and make Sugarlaws a lot more exciting, both for me and for my readers.

C40. What is your all-time favorite meal?

KA. I love tasting all different things, so I’m partial to meals with lots of small, tapas-like dishes.  I love sushi, bread, cheese, fresh fruits and veggies; I was a vegetarian for thirteen years, so a lot of my favorite dishes are still vegetarian. And I also have a total sweet tooth; I love cake frosting, with or without the actual cake!

C40. Since launching your blog, how has your style evolved?

KA. It’s made me much more open to experimenting. I used to rely a lot more on my few favorite staples, and now I try new things so much more—especially with jewelry; I used to have my few pieces that I’d wear with every single outfit. Thankfully, I’ve broken that habit!  I’ve also learned to trust my judgment when I’m putting an outfit together. Sometimes, when I’m looking in the mirror, it takes a lot of tinkering before I’m satisfied.

C40. What blogs are you currently stalking?

KA. You already listed two of my favorites!  I also just met Jessica from What I Wore and Lindsay from Saucy Glossie on a trip last week, and their blogs are my newest obsession!  I’m constantly amazed by how cool, beautiful and chic the fashion blogging community is.

C40. How would you describe your style to someone that may not be familiar with you or Sugarlaws?

KA. I’d like to think that it’s elegant, but effortless—stylish pieces that you can actually wear in everyday life!  I like everything to look timeless—if you looked back at an outfit post a year later, it shouldn’t feel dated; it should just feel classic.

C40. Who or what inspires your day-to-day life and style?

KA. Everything about NYC, from what my friends are wearing to what I see on the streets.  I love that everyone has their own distinctive style.  I also think a lot about what I can wear, as a girl in her twenties, that will make me look professional and put-together without ever being boring.

C40. What are you currently coveting?

KA. I want a really great brown leather bag.  And I’ve been looking for super-high black platform wedges for a while. I’m small, so I need shoes that add a little height!

C40. When you aren’t blogging, what can you be found doing in your free time?

KA. Shopping and cooking!  I live with my husband and two adorable dogs, so I spend a lot of time chilling out with them. And I love going out with friends, or just curling up with a good book.

C40. What is your biggest vice?

KA. Reality television; I’m totally addicted!  Well, all television, actually.

C40. What are some of your favorite NYC clothing stores?

KA. So many!  I love Intermix, Saks, Henri Bendel and all the cute boutiques in Soho and the West Village.  And I’m always shocked by how many great pieces I find at Topshop and H&M!
