Look of the Day: Weightless Armor

Last October, we wrote about Rad Hourani and the “fierce, space-age metal gear and club kid leftovers” he introduced for FW09. Well, his follow-up collections have not disappointed. His latest takes on futuristic goth? Pure badassness.
A longtime fan, what astonishes me most about Hourani are the thoughts behind his processes. Focused on continuity, each piece in his collections contain clean lines and detailed stitching that prevent one from seeing where one garment begins and another ends—and each collection is born from the ashes of the previous; his objective is to create garments that can be worn by anyone at any time, so he subverts the biannual fashion calendar to some extent by linking “SS” to “FW”. Though following in the footsteps of dark, avant-garde designers like Rick Owens, Gareth Pugh and Helmut Lang, this is one of the factors that makes this young designer stand out.
The theme of his FW10 collection is “Weightless Armor”. Leather looks to protect, though the interpretation of each piece is left to the individual. My favorite look is composed of slashed leather leggings and what appears to be a hoodie-turned-cape—which, in itself, makes evident Hourani’s brilliance in design.
