LOOK OF THE DAY: BATTLE OF THE SEQUINED JUMPSUITS

The couture shows are always a highlight for me; I revel in the whimsical fantasy associated with the full-on glamorous pieces, as well as the imagination and magnificent amount of work that go into creating them. The Fall 2010 season was no exception. While reviewing the shows, I gasped out loud upon seeing the amazing gold jumpsuit in the Elie Saab show. Complete with sequins and a ruched boatneck, and anchored by wide-leg trousers (my favorite!), I immediately knew that the look would soon be my choice C40 Look of the Day. But then I saw the Jean Paul Gaultier show, and was in quite a conundrum; he, too, showed a fabulous metallic sequined jumpsuit. The neckline was high, the pants were slim and the sleeves were batwing-esque. Gaultier’s version was accessorized with a skinny waist belt, layers of gold chains and a turban-like topper. Upping the drama factor (in true Gaultier style), the jumpsuited model was also carrying a cigarette down the runway—in a slender-and-feminine holder, of course.

Though the star of both is a gold sequined jumpsuit, and each is modern and pretty, they are clearly very different. While hard to choose a favorite, if I absolutely had to, I’d go with Gaultier’s; anything that might make me feel like a cross between Joan Crawford and Alexis Carrington-Colby is a win in my book. Which do you like best?
