We Are Stalking: THE DIVINITUS

Her clothing is dark; her photography, dramatic. With her elegantly-edgy fashion blog THE DIVINITUS, New England-based Dorota has carefully cultivated an homage to her personal style and beautiful photography; in viewing The Divinitus, her almost-two-decades-old loves of black clothing, photography and simple, yet powerful, clothing design are obvious. Recently, Dorota opened up to C40 about her blog, her life outside of the blogosphere and how, exactly, she came up with the her site’s unconventional name.
C40. Why did you start your blog, THE DIVINITUS? What inspired you to have a blog focusing on your personal style?
D. A couple of years ago, we went to the Sundance Film Festival before the screenings started. Everybody was occupied, updating their websites and blogs; I had my laptop, too, so I went with the trend and created a blog. At first, it wasn’t really focused on my style; that came over time.
C40. What is your biggest vice?
D. Holding to one path—but I’ve heard consistency is part of having a style.
C40. When you aren’t blogging, what are you doing?
D. I co-own and run an independent production company, which specializes in digital video entertainment and design services. We are quite busy, and recently signed our latest movie with Netflix.
C40. How would you sum up your aesthetic?
D. In general, I like to know where a design came from; I like to see organic structures, abstract cuts and volume. I guess I’d call it “casual avant-garde”.
C40. Who does the photography for your site? How does the photography translate the aesthetic of your blog’s style to your audience?
D. For a while, I took my own photographs with a remote control; most of pictures were just basic shots against a brick wall. I wouldn’t even call it “photography”; their purpose was strictly to document an ensemble. Recently, I decided to put more thought into it and make use of one of my degrees, which is nomen omen promotional [fashion] photography. We shall see…
C40. What are you currently coveting?
D. Same old; when browsing my pictures taken in the ’90s, I can see certain things haven’t changed: black, web knits, torn denim, leather and fur.
C40. What blogs are you stalking?
D. I would have to name all the blogs from my blog roll, and I wouldn’t want to miss anybody. As far as stalking, Garbage Dress first comes to my mind.
C40. How do you pick outfits for THE DIVINITUS?
D. I think, “Did I wear it already?” I rotate the same pieces in in different combinations. I don’t think I’m a mass buyer.
C40. How did you get the name for your blog? What is the meaning behind it?
D. I studied Latin in the past; I think it’s fair to favor that language instead. “Divinitus” can be translated as “by inspiration” or “admirably”.
C40. Most of your outfits on THE DIVINITUS are black. What draws you to black?
D. Black provides a break from all of the surrounding, common kitsch; it feels liberating somehow. I’ve worn black for almost two decades now. A few years back, I tried to bring in some brown, olive and gray, but it didn’t last long. However, I do own few dresses in color; I like color in its full impact, and a dress can deliver it without looking too overwhelming. I’m also a big fan of white. I choose to live in white empty spaces because I cannot relax in piled-up clutter.

I LOVE HER!
her style is so unique — every photo is like a work of art
thank you for introducing us to her…
I love her style!
She is definitely what you would call a simple person. Simple, but complex, because she thinks about things, and for some reason, I don’t think she means to do it (or maybe she does), but the simplicity really makes you wonder.
Her work is quite amazing. And I know exactly what you mean about the simplicity, Kenita. It’s what drew me to her work in the first place.
wow. what a great feature. ive been amazed by this girl for a while- and its great to get to know her a little more. thanks
