EYES OF THE BEHOLDER

When a woman makes an entrance, different people will notice different things about her; I would argue that men are more likely to notice her shape, while women will pay more attention to what she’s wearing. Whether it relates to my being a male womenswear designer or to the fact that I’ve always been a people watcher, I look at everything—from her hair and makeup to her dress and accessories, and even the way she walks. I have found that women from all walks of life are inspiring to me.

Lately, I have been most fascinated by women’s faces, and how makeup can really change them. Eye makeup, specifically, can really take a look to the next level, and can even make the wearer almost unrecognizable; I mean, why not be a woman of many faces?

From New York to Milan, the FW10 runways presented some of the most amazing makeup looks I’ve seen—and, of course, I had my favorites. When it came to innovation, Chanel was at the top; the shadow was quite dark, but the color gradually disintegrated as it moved away from the lid, a beautiful technique introduced by makeup artist Peter PhilipsGucci, on the other hand, displayed an effortless vixen look—thanks to makeup guru Pat McGrath. Laid-back, mature and a little intense, the models’ faces paired perfectly with their outfits.

As a designer, I love to find the face that will best represent my collection; I feel it ties my story of the season together. Away from the runway, however, my advice is to find what works for you—and have fun. From books and glossies to the Beauty content on style.com and even YouTube videos, it’s easy to find out “how-to” nail all of the season’s top makeup looks, from natural to dramatic.
