Fashion: Cult Status

Uncommon Creatures FW10

Uncommon Creatures gives me what fellow C40 writer-slash-stiletto-rocking assassin Autumn would call “the feelings.” This brand-spanking-new and almost obscure label is by Copenhagen-based designers Jens Kold-Christensen and Christina Højris, who have mastered the art of creating a collection that is dark, bold and mysterious, while—at the same time—highly-approachable and unintimidating; Uncommon Creatures strikes a balance between avant-garde and wholly realistic fashion. As there isn’t a piece in this men’s collection that I wouldn’t wear, it’s safe to say that this is yet another seemingly-androgynous label that has stolen my heart. Heavy in black and grays, I find the most striking pieces to be the hats—which the designers count as the collection’s central element.

Kold-Christensen found inspiration for the line’s debut collection in the subway, while en route to Brooklyn. Taken by traditional Orthodox garb, he toyed with the idea of creating a collection inspired by Orthodox Jewish style. The rest is history. Made up of harem pants, combat boots, layered capes and structured tops, Kold-Christensen incorporated several hats—which reference his sole inspiration.

What could be mistaken for a Rick Owens or Rad Hourani knock-off, Uncommon Creatures holds its own, thanks to exquisite tailoring, raw design and unique ethnic fusions. As this is just the beginning, I’m calling out Uncommon Creatures as the next powerhouse cult label to watch.
