HOW I GLOVE THEE
Monday, March 1st, 2010
Oh, FW10 accessories, how do I glove thee? Let me count the ways. Designers sent countless numbers of gloves down their runways, and I’ve defined some of the glove trends we’ll likely be seeing come fall—from “finger harnesses” to the nearly-shoulder-length, the furry to the sheer.

Many designers sent fur gloves down the runway—some subtle, some a little more muppet-like. Practical? Probably not. Warm and eye-catching? Definitely. TopShop Unique and Pringle of Scotland both showed mid-forearm-length, full-blown furry mittens in a neutral pallete, while Brian Reyes’ fur gloves were tinted green for that sexy Jim Henson look. But it was designer Thuy Diep’s take that was the most dramatic, revealing models up to their elbows (literally) in fur.

Another hot glove trend was the return of fingerless gloves. Tracy Reese’s models wore opera-length, knit fingerless gloves with ultra-femme dresses, while Vera Wang chose a more delicate, spiderweb-like fingerless style. But, my favorite of all fingerless styles would have to be those seen on the Chado Ralph Rucci runway, which I can only describe as “finger harnesses”. Love them!

Practically redefining “glove”, the nearly-shoulder-length versions at Philosophy by Alberta Ferretti were more like sleeves; Marc Jacobs and Ports 1961 also followed the opera-length trend, while Ralph Lauren meshed the trend with two others—sheer and fingerless. Sheer genius! Betsey Johnson, on the other hand, kept her sheer gloves short.

My two favorite glove styles don’t fall underneath any of the trends, but must be mentioned—the spiked gloves at Cushnie et Ochs and the heavy knit gloves at Michael Kors; so heavy and so big, it’s hard to tell where the oversized sweater stops and the accessory begins.
