COTTON CANDY COIFFES

When I was a little girl, I was obsessed with My Little Pony. They were the “It” thing back then because a) they were just so damn cute, and b) they had the best pastel hair. I was inspired by my after-school friends and wanted my look to match theirs, so I went to the kitchen, pulled out a pack of Kool-Aid and became the 7-year-old version of Kim Vo. Needless to say, it didn’t work out so well.

Well, almost 20 years later ,the same colorful streaks I was seeking as a kid are a hot trend, both on the runway (seen at Proenza Schouler and Giles Deacon for SS10) and in editorials (from US Nylon to Australia’s Yen). They’re back in soft shades of pastel-like pink, lilac, periwinkle and mint green. I’d like to think designers were, like me, inspired by My Little Pony; you never know.

Trendsetters Ashley Olsen, Pixie Geldof and Kelly Osbourne have all taken to the look—as has her royal hotness, Lady Gaga.

If you’re willing to take the trend for a test spin, you’ve got a few options:

1)   If you’re a commitment-phobe, get some hair extensions that are already dyed, or dye them yourself. That way, you can clip them in, style them however you want and remove at the end of the day.

2)   If you’re feeling pretty ballsy and are really digging the Proenza Schouler surf-punk look, go to your salon for a light-green or violet dye. For blonde babes, you’ll most likely be able to get the color applied immediately, as you need to have a very light base for pastels. For ravenous vixens like myself, our only hope is to bleach out our own color first and then put new color in.

3)   If you’re an in-betweensy, then go to a beauty supply store and look for a temporary hairspray that comes in vibrant colors. Jerome Russell has a line of vibrant hairsprays called BWild Temporary Color Spray. Highly recommended.
