Fashion: On Trend
WORK IT OUT
Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010
Sweatpants have been slowly but steadily making their mark in the fashion world. Once relegated to the gym or your home, sweats have been on the women’s runways for seasons now. Popularized by the sporty-chic look of Alexander Wang, I myself recently succumbed to the comfy-chic trend. However, the look is not what its 1980s predecessors once were. Basically, these are not your parent’s sweatpants. These are not the sweats you would get at Grandpa Pigeons or Venture for $5.99 a piece. These are carefully constructed, high thread count and sometimes cashmere-mixed “sweats.” They are to be paired with boots and shoes, not with dirty sneakers; blazers, not muscle shirts and hoodies.
Men have decided that they too want to incorporate sweatpants into their daily looks. As evidenced in the FW10 shows of Bottega Veneta, Costume National, Rick Owens, Pringle of Scotland, Dolce & Gabbana and Emporio Armani, among others. Take note of how the pants are paired- with tailored jackets and combat boots – this is a dressed up sweatpant, one not suitable for jogging or working out. Some styles were even made more ready-to-wear with belt loops and tapered bottoms, while some were more casual-friendly styles, sometimes even looking like long johns, a la Dolce & Gabbana. Emporio Armani stayed true to sweatpants’ roots adopting a sporty look, paired with fitted knit tops. Are you brave enough to work it out for fall?
