Fashion: On Trend

Salute Your Shorts

I love winter, don’t get me wrong, but I am sick and tired of this nasty weather. As I look forward to spring and the warmer months, I find myself looking at the Marc Jacobs’ SS10 collection more often. I’m drawn—naturally—to the barely there tap pants that he showed–ultra-short, ultra-chic and ever so vintage inspired.

Yes, tap pants. That’s a real thing. They were also shown at Brian Reyes, Vena Cava and Dior. Satin tap pants were given this name because they are similar to the shorts that tap dancers wore in practice in the days of Ginger Rodgers, Vera-Ellen and Ann Miller. They also go by “feminine boxer shorts” and my personal fave, “mother-trusts-me pants.” I couldn’t make that one up even if I tried.

For the real world, wear it with a boyfriend blazer or a loose satin camisole and some thigh high stockings. And if you can’t wait until spring, pair it with an oversized cashmere sweater and thigh high knit socks or opaque tights. The best part about this trend is that you don’t need to get what’s out right now, look to your favorite vintage store or online retailer to get the real deal.
