CHRIS BENZ
Monday, February 1st, 2010
Designer Chris Benz recently told the Cut Blog that his last collection was inspired by The Carol Burnett Show. Then my heart stopped, and I immediately went to look at his website to see his latest collection, as I too am a huge fan of the ’70s and The Carol Burnett Show. Swoon! The very first thing to catch my eye? Sequins! Duh, what’s new? Like a magpie, I am very attracted to sparkly things. Give me a sequin and a plunging V-neck, and I’m sold! Sad, but true, I’m won over that easily. Add color, lots of color, wide leg pants, muppet-like fur and amazing proportions, I become out of control. Chris Benz’s SS10 collection promises all of that and more.
Benz was a 2004 graduate of Parsons New School of Design, an intern at Marc Jacobs and former CFDA emerging designer winner. While I am impressed by his pedigree, I am more impressed with his latest collection – the cohesiveness and the versatility of the clothes. The clothes can easily go from the office to happy hour, then to a date or a night out with the girls. The Chris Benz girl is clearly playful and fun with an eye for sophistication. She is a confident risk-taker and cares little for what others have to say. She truly dances to the beat of her own drum.
