CAPE TOWN – LINDSEY THORNBURG
Friday, February 5th, 2010
Lindsey Thornburg is the girl with a cloak of many colors. Inspired by her transient NYC lifestyle, upbringing in Aspen and travels to South America, Thornburg creates high quality and limited edition cloaks for city and country girls alike.
For Thornburg, function comes first and then fashion blooms out of it. Her cloaks vary in sizes from mini to full length and are made from Peruvian-inspired limited novelty wool with silk linings. Because her fabric choices aren’t bought in bulk, she is able to offer a variety of patterns and colors and also sell them in limited quantities. In fact, the most she’s ever sold of one item is ten—making each one a work of art. Thank God, I really don’t need to see someone else wearing my bright pink Navajo print cape at the next fashion event I attend. How embarrassing.
She also makes maxi and mini long sleeve holiday dresses–slinky yet demure frocks in a variety of fabrics and patterns. But I keep going back to her capes. Just imagine being swathed in these voluminous cloaks. Great for dreary NYC days, chilly LA nights by the beach, skiing in the mountains or camping in the heartland. They’re dramatic but not costumey. And it’s all you need to make an outfit—or your own cloak of invisibility.
