UNMENTIONABLES WORTH MENTIONING – JEAN YU
Monday, February 8th, 2010
Too often today we’re surrounded by lingerie brands that push ‘em up, strap ‘em in, and are covered in flashy colors and prints. But Jean Yu has created a line of lingerie that is free of lace, wires, padding or any other contraptions. In other words, you’re all that’s needed to be sexy.
Yu launched her signature collection of 1930’s reminiscent silk lingerie and sheer gowns in 2001 alongside her store, 37=1 on Crosby Street in SoHo in NYC. She uses melt-in-your-mouth fabrics like silk chiffon, charmueuse and georgette in a nude color palette that just screams for layering.
Aside from lingerie, she creates delicate yet powerful separates. You might remember one of her gowns from the April 2004 cover of Vogue. Gwen Stefani donned a black and white long sleeve horizontal stripe silky number. Every piece in her collection is made so that there is no distinction between the feel of the lining and the feel of the outer fabric. They’re very Jean Harlow yet very modern-provocative. A playful combination of sheers and architecture. Who knew that butt-cleavage could look so tasteful?
What’s great about Jean Yu is that her designs make a point through construction, not through embellishments. It’s a smart kind of sexy that celebrates your true beauty and sex appeal. How liberating! These are definitely some unmentionables worth mentioning.
