Fashion: Cult Status

Society for Rational Dress

“An architect, like a clothing designer, designs a space that people are going to move around in. It is our job to make that space comforting, inviting and inspiring,” Corinne Grassini, founder of clothing line, Society for Rational Dress said in reference to her well-honed craft of making clothes that make women feel confident in their clothing.

Grassini’s description of clothing design is readily instilled SfRD’s SS10 collection. Structured shapes juxtaposed with flowy materials like silks and linens create a comfortable and chic aesthetic synonymous with SfRD. The synched waists create a slimming effect, while flattering feminine curves and avoiding anything that might resemble a sack dress. One of my favorite aspects about the collection is the versatility. Whether it’s a wedding or a day at the market, each piece can be re-worked to fit any occasion.

Earning a BA in Sociology from the University of Washington and later attending Central Saint Martins in London, Grassini found a unique way to combine her seemingly unrelatable  degrees. Inspired by the 19th century London-based Rational Dress Society, a group of women who banned together to protest Victorian-era garb and her love of clothes came her label Society for Rational Dress. Grassini takes a socio-cultural approach to her clothing line, ditching vapid trends for clothes that are meant to empower and flatter womens figures rather than over expose them.
