HOT LIKE MAGMA- RISTO

Risto Bimbiloski has sharpened his skills at Jean Colonna, Thierry Mugler, and Louis Vuitton menswear (where he is currently head of  men’s knitwear–with Marc Jacobs as a mentor, of course). Impressive, to say the least. Born in Macedonia and inspired by his country’s heritage of skillful knitting and handcrafting, Risto incorporates the practices into his collections. His SS10 collection (and NYFW debut) focused on knitwear and prints of “beautiful, dangerous, and random phenomena. Think volcanoes and storms—intended,” he says, “for a woman who has a kind of dark, elegant and slightly dangerous style.”

The prints were outstanding, like something I’d never seen before. A lightning bolt shot across one model’s stomach, down another’s leg, while the bright hues of orange and yellow that signified liquid hot magma from a volcano enveloped caftans, second-skin tops, pants and skirts. Many of the skirts looked trench-coat inspired, as if the designer himself took a pair of scissors to his favorite coat, hemmed it and tied it at the waist–interesting, and a nice opposition to many of the skin-tight, sheer looks. Aside from the wonderful, colored prints, beautifully-layered chain necklaces that complimented Risto’s pieces beautifully were also standouts in the collection. I can’t wait to see what Risto has in store for his FW10 collection. This should definitely be interesting.
