EDDIE BORGO JEWELRY
Monday, February 15th, 2010
Let’s call it what it is–bad-ass jewelry for bad-ass bitches. Plain and simple. Eddie Borgo’s collections are “deeply rooted in the street culture of New York and the punk movement.” That’s easy to see from one look at any of his collections. There is a definitive and hard edge to the line, without trying to be cool–and that’s a hard task to master. Whether you’re coveting the bear trap ring or the leather-studded cuff, this collection truly rocks.
Looking further, one can see how Borgo also draws inspiration from modern architecture and sculpture. What stood out to me the most, however, were the almost pervasive sexual overtones of his pieces. The use of geometric cones, pyramids, studs and nails can come off phallic, and I don’t think that is coincidence. To me, there are obvious references to both male and female genitalia, lending a wink and nod, a little naughtiness to whomever is wearing a Borgo piece- or whomever is looking their way. Or maybe my mind is just always in the gutter. Hmmmm…
The SS10 collection is surprisingly feminine, as opposed to FW09, which had a little more punk edge to it. Fellas, you’re no longer left out of all of the fun. You, too can now be a part of the Eddie Borgo movement and pick up a piece from his SS10 collection for men. Need more reasons to love the line? Borgo is a collaborator and go-to jewelry designer for Altuzarra, Jen Kao, Philip Lim, Marchesa and Staerk.
