Song of Style: Aimee Song
Friday, February 5th, 2010
There must be something in the California air. Recently, an abundance of West Coast bloggers have emerged–and have redefined California style. Eons away from over-tanned skin, bolted-on tits and Barbie-like outfits, bloggers including Emily Schuman and Raych Nguyen have stepped outside of stereotypical California style, hyping their own takes on what it means to be California casual. I was lucky enough to interview one standout Cali blogger, Aimee Song, whose style is a mix of all things pretty, grunge and flawlessly sophisticated. Her blog, Song of Style, meshes her flirty demeanor with her impeccable style. It’s hard not to fall in love with her, and even harder not to lust over each garment she so eloquently wears.
Q: When did you start Song of Style? What inspired you to start your blog?
A: I started my blog about a little over a year ago. I originally wanted to start an interior design-related blog, but–as I got into reading fashion blogs–I realized that it was so much easier to document my outfits than link every featured interior design photo back to its original link.
Q: Who are your style icons?
A: I don’t really have a style icon, but I love my mom’s style in the ’90s; a lot of the pieces I have from her are things she wore in the ’90s. I also love almost everything Chloë Sevigny wears; everything just seems to work on her.
Q: How has your style evolved since starting Song of Style? How would you describe your current personal style?
A: Starting my blog and documenting my outfits definitely helped me realize what works on my body type; I feel like I dress in a way that flatters my body now, and I also feel a lot more comfortable and confident in the clothes I wear. I’m not sure if my style has really changed; I’ve always been a girly-meets-grunge type of girl, and my style is still like that.
Q: What are you currently coveting?
A: A cream-colored quilted Chanel bag. They are sold out everywhere in the US, and are ten percent more expensive as of February 1, when Chanel decided to raise their prices. Boo!
Q: What is your favorite fashion blog (other than Song of Style!) What do you like about that blog/blogger?
A: Karla’s Closet. I’ve never really been into buying thrift clothes or vintage clothes until I started reading Karla’s blog. I also love the fact that she doesn’t follow any trends, but dresses in what works for her. Plus, she is so beautiful.
Q: What advice do you have for aspiring fashion bloggers?
A: I’m going to be all cliche and say, “just be yourself, rather than try to be something you aren’t.” Also, post big, clear pictures that are easy to look at–rather than small, grainy pictures.
Q: If you could go shopping with anyone, living or dead, who would it be?
A: Anyone but my boyfriend! Shopping with my sister or my parents is fun; most likely my sister, but then I’d have to buy her stuff–so I’d rather go by myself.
Q: What super power do you most want?
A: I want to fly really, really badly. More than being invisible. I really want to fly.
Q: Who is your all-time favorite designer?
A: When it comes to handbags, definitely Chanel; they never go out of style. But, clothing-wise, I don’t think I really have an all-time favorite.
Q: What is your most prized possession? (doesn’t have to be clothes related)
A: Charcoal Mason Song, my 8-month-old puppy my boyfriend and I adopted.
