Fashion: The Scoop
GETTING SUBVERSIVE
Monday, January 4th, 2010
Oh, here we go again. FEELINGS!!! I can’t contain myself. Recently introduced to Subversive Jewelry, I can barely find the words to convey how I feel about the line of necklaces, bracelets and earrings–other than amazing, awesome, incredible. This line is chunky, funky and cool. Statement pieces that–somehow–aren’t totally overwhelming. Many of the necklaces are layered and layered, with mixed metals, pearls, baubles and spikes galore. The complex line is divided into sub-categories: Sunken Treasure, Calder’s Circus, Soft Science, Topography and Rainforests I and II. I would like a piece from each, as I can’t even begin to decide which piece is my favorite.
Designed by Justin Giunta (who was awarded the CFDA’s Swarovski Emerging Talent Award for Accessory Design in July ‘09), Subversive Jewelry “plays with the idea of the Baroque philosophy of more is more, and the modern idea of deconstruction in fashion.” Giunta’s aesthetic is based in art history yet he meshes the lines between what is old and what is contemporary masterfully. Though some are seemingly random clusters, each piece specifically designed and thought out. Amazing.
Go ahead; get a little Subversive with your jewelry. You won’t regret it.
