BAD TO THE BONE

Are you in the market for some statement accessories? Looking for something dark and edgy with a little bit of intriguing uncomfort mixed in? Well I’ve found it. No ifs, ands or buts about it, it’s badass and bad to the bone–really; it’s bone jewelry.

Derrick Cruz, designer of the dark and mysterious Black Sheep and Prodigal Sons accessories line, has collaborated with Pamela Love to create a very-limited-edition mammoth talon cuff. The claws are carved out of fossilized Siberian wooly mammoth tusk and are detailed with sterling silver and six black diamonds. I think I just fashion-gasmed.

Cruz uses his ability to combine endangered technologies and rare materials to create narrative accessories and art objects. Under the influence of funerary crafts, alchemical studies and Native American mythology, Cruz honors the past, and his objects both emerge as intimate fetishes and materialize his obsession with the beauty potentially found in the darkness.

Black Sheep and Prodigal Sons have also created a replica of a human jaw dipped in gold, which is to be used as an ashtray or tray for small valuables. Aside from bone pieces, the line consists of other great jewelry pieces and keepsakes, available on its online store.

If the mammoth talon cuff isn’t up your alley (or your pocketbook, at a cool $2,900!), check out Pamela Love’s talon ring and talon cuff. Just as edgy, but more affordable ($275 for the ring), they’re basically the same idea–but less wooly mammoth.

Not into the bone trend? Well, here’s a treat for you! Etsy member Porcelain Skulls sells muskrat and skunk jaws with gold-plated teeth on a silver chain for $75. They also make a pretty cool porcelain beaver skulls with gold-glazed teeth for $110, which are perfect for a desk or entry table.

But wait, it gets better. Look at these gun hoofs by artist Iris Schieferstein! The artist took her hoof shoe design up a notch with a feminine revolver stiletto.

Yes, maybe this micro-trend is pretty out-there, but throw me a bone here–you can’t deny that it’s tempting.
