THE MOD SQUAD – LISA PERRY
Wednesday, January 6th, 2010
Style-wise, I’m all over the place. At heart, I’m a ’70s boho/hippie, but I’ve been known to branch out into other eras. I love the glam luxe of the ’20s and ’40s, the hard edge of the ’80s and the nostalgic feel of the ’90s. One era that remains almost as close to my heart as the decade in which I was born is the ’60s, particularly the mod styles that emerged from the time. I’m unsure as to the origin of this surprising love; it tends to be a little more on the conservative side for me–maybe it started with Twiggy, or go-go dancers, my childhood love of the Brady Bunch or my fascination with Jackie Kennedy Onassis. Whatever the case, I’ve always been mad for mod.
Finding great vintage mod can be difficult; if I find a piece I like, it is most often either too small or too short, too damaged or too expensive. Thankfully, I discovered designer Lisa Perry. This Chicago-born designer has a passion for ’60s vintage couture fashion and art; she’s a lover of all things mod and modern. Perry’s line of shifts, pants, sweaters, a-line minis and swing coats come in poppy, retro colors and geometric lines; it’s a mod for the new millennium. One of the most interesting aspects of the collection is that many of the pieces are two-for-one; a long-sleeved dress becomes short-sleeved, a shift dress becomes a top, a mini dress becomes a micro-mini–all with just one quick zip. I am amazed by the designer’s ingenuity in creating these unique pieces; the idea of two-for-one clothes in this economy is a brilliant one, one from which other designers should definitely borrow.
