Fashion: Freshman Class
WHITLEY KROS
Wednesday, January 13th, 2010
When considering celebrity-designed fashion lines, one’s gut reaction is to be skeptical. Did the star really design the clothes, or are they merely a figurehead? Do we like the clothes, or just the associated name? The subject can get a little heated sometimes among the fashion obsessed. We’ve come to know the good–Elizabeth and James and DVB; the bad–anyone from The Hills, Laguna Beach, The City or any other reality show and the ugly–anything with ties to Lindsay Lohan. For me, Whitley Kros is in the first listed category bracket. Designed by Marissa Ribisi (actress, sister of actor Giovanni Ribisi and wife of musician Beck) and Sophia Coloma, this line is California-cool, hippie chic and definitely funky.
Ribisi starred in one of my very favorite movies, constant source of inspiration Dazed & Confused. Although I had been aware of the Whitley Kros line for a few seasons, I only recently discovered that Ribisi is the designer. The muse of the line, however, is aptly described as a gypsy child, a dreamer; the clothes most certainly reflect that aesthetic. The SS10 collection is a mix of bohemian and contemporary, complete with textured separates, chunky knits and retro prints. My favorite pieces are the flowy, printed dresses, with versatile fabrics that easily transition from one season to the next.
The moral of the story? Don’t discount a celebrity-designed line without looking first. You might actually see something you like.
