ELAINE KIM v2.0
Wednesday, January 13th, 2010
Look out, everyone; Elaine Kim is back for round two–new collection, new outlook and better than ever. Kim established the line Product in 1992, and it quickly became a favorite of A-listers Madonna, Cameron Diaz, Sofia Coppola and Kate Moss. In 2000, she sold the line and took an eight-year hiatus from the fashion world.
In 2008, she came back with the eponymous high end line, Elaine Kim–and, man, she came back big with a voice and a vision. Kim’s pieces are strong, yet simple; minimalist, yet sculptural. The sensual silhouettes are somehow edgy, clean, easy to wear and sophisticated all at the same time–and some of the pieces are even eco-friendly; her eco-collection works with Cupro-cotton, a fabric derived from Japanese technology that takes discarded cotton husks and regenerates them into a smooth, rich fabric. All in all, the collection is undoubtedly special. “We’ve passed through the era of generic,” says the architecturally-inspired designer.
Kim’s muses are fashion-conscious, artistic, sophisticated urban women who are established in their careers and know their personal styles (translation: HBICs). Her collection looks to be the dream closet of a gallery girl–or any woman who knows what she wants and would consider busting a few skulls to get there…while wearing cashmere, of course.
