Fashion: On Trend

TINY DANCER

While perusing the SS10 runway shows, I noticed a recurring theme. Whether it was conscious to the designers, I don’t know, but I noticed that a few collections had a Degas feel to them–particularly Dennis Basso’s and Vera Wang’s. The French artist, Degas, is famous for his depictions of dancers in paintings and sculptures. As a dancer myself, I’ve always been a huge fan of Degas; his work is captivating and thoughtful, and truly captures the essence and beauty of a dancer.

Dennis Basso’s SS10 line was youthful and elegant, just like a ballerina. The clothes seemed to wink at the young dancers who likely inspired his collection. The tops of the dresses were extremely fitted–almost molded to the body–while the skirts jutted out like tu-tus, with ample flounce and flutter. One can almost imagine a ballerina leaping gracefully across a stage in one of his creations.

Vera Wang’s collection had a truly ethereal feel to it. Between the soft, sheer chiffons and the ankle-laced shoes, one can certainly assume the designer’s inspirations for SS10 included dance apparel. Although the translation is not as literal as Dennis Basso’s, I concluded that ballet wrap sweaters and camisoles were likely inspirations for some of the tops revealed on the runway–each of which was consistent with Wang’s knack for creating romantic clothing.
