Fashion: On Trend

SHOW ME YOUR GARTER

The days of leaving lingerie at home are long gone. We all saw a plethora of bra-bearing tops on the FW09 runways (Stella McCartney and Balenciaga come to mind), but–lately–I’ve noticed another lingerie trend that might have a leg up on the cleavage situation; the garter belt.

As an ode to the ’40s, the garter belt has made quite a comeback. However, making a point to show it off is very late ’80s. Combine the two concepts and you have this whole “look how sexy, cool and ballsy I am” vibe going on. Paired with a casual tee, looser-fitting shorts and some badass shoes or boots, the garter belt can add some tough-girl style to an otherwise clueless outfit.

Back in February, Erin Wasson was the first to fully embrace this trend when she added suspender belts and thigh highs to denim shorts and velvet dresses. Hussein Chalayan showed thigh-high boots (another FW09 must-have) with garters, and nearly every look at Christian Dior Couture FW09 included exposed garters. Since it hit the runways, celeb style icons such as Byrdie Bell, Taylor Momsen, Katy Perry and Rhianna have become avid believers in this daringly-sexy trend.

I tried out the look just to prove that it has wearability. While it may not be appropriate before 9am, and certainly not appropriate for Home Depot, the garter belt look is a party must-have if you’re looking to switch up your nighttime attire.
