HELMUT LANG SS10
Monday, December 14th, 2009
So, I know I talk a lot about things I’m obsessed with; I have OCD when it comes to denim, jackets, shoes,…and new collections are definitely one of the top triggers. You see, I get crushes on clothes. It may sound weird to some, but–to those in the know–these feelings come about often. Autumn will refer to fashion as porn, and Jill talks about how certain pieces give her “the feelings”. I, too, get these feelings, especially when talking about ANY collection by Helmut Lang.
I don’t know when my love affair with Lang began, but it feels eternal. I love the minimalism of the designs and the way each collection comes together with every piece. Although I’m a huge fan of color, I love how Helmut Lang stays in a neutral palette, thus enabling the wearer to decide where they want to go with their look.
The SS10 collection by designers Nicole and Michael Colovos did not disappoint; it was classic Lang, through and through. I love the abstract and ombre prints used on the tops, skirts and dresses. I’m crazy about the use of asymmetry throughout the entire collection. What keeps me coming back to Lang are the amazing pants and jackets; they rarely disappoint. Usually on the skinny side of things, this season’s peg-legged pants were shown in both traditional and “Hammer style” cuts. If you’ve never tried on Helmut Lang pants, you are truly missing out. I count my numerous pairs of Helmut Lang skinnies–black, gray, black denim and black corduroy–among my fave pants to wear. The bonus for me? At six-feet-tall, they are actually long enough!
The collection showed so much depth, from draped jersey cardigans to impeccably-cut jackets, denim and lace–and I loved the juxtaposition of one against the other. The skirts and shorts are barely there, the silhouettes of the pants are on trend and the jackets are immaculately tailored. Finally, the jersey pieces achieve the perfect balance of softness and comfort, without losing shape.
If I had to pick my favorite look–though that is nearly impossible–I would have to go for look 34, the black-denim-moto-jacket-and-skinny-pants ensemble. Although I love look 13, and all of the dresses are to die for.
