WRAP YOUR SKULL AROUND THIS ONE
Wednesday, December 16th, 2009
Try to wrap your head around this one–a purse in the shape of a skull, covered in metallic, suede and leather. If you’ve ever wanted to fit more into your cranium without cramming all night, here’s a way to do it: stuff it with your keys, credit cards and phone. Natalia Brilli is the brain behind this piece, along with many other objects she has wrapped up in leather.
This Belgian-born, ex-Rochas designer specializes in leather- and lambskin-covered objects, including skateboards, domino sets, even a pineapple. Her signature style is literal, yet whimsical; she keeps the object’s actual intended use in mind with every design. She has a black leather wallet embossed with a credit card outline, and a laptop bag with embossed keyboard shapes.
She’s truly an artist, and a unique one at that–finding inspiration in Victorian aesthetics, Dario Argento’s horror films and 17th century Vanity paintings. Those Vanity paintings became the namesake for Brilli’s skull bags, which first made me fall in love with her art. Her work is smart, witty, literal, whimsical and a little bit macabre. It’s a lot to wrap your skull around.
