West Coast company Legionnaire Army is making a bigger splash this fall by expanding their ever so popular T-shirt line to include accessories and kids T’s. Creators Joe Moxley and Mike Herrera, front man of MxPx and Tumbledown tells C40 how Legionnaire Army got started, their inspiration, and what they want us to wear this spring.

Q: How did Legionnaire Army[L.A.] get started?
A: I had a clothing line called “Meddy“ and I sponsored Mike when he was on tour with MxPx. I noticed he really liked the style and would wear
it all the time. I talked with Mike to see if he wanted to team up and start a clothing line together. He liked the idea and Legionnaire was born.
Q: L.A. has been growing and we see that there’s a new kids line. Can you tell us a little about why you both decided to do a kids collection?
A: I have been making custom kid shirts for my kids and all my friend’s kids for the last couple of years. I kept getting emails from parents asking where they could get cool shirts for their kids. So you have to give the customers what they want! Plus, kids shirts sell really well because it is hard to find a kids shirt that has style.
Q: Music is obviously a huge inspiration behind L.A., where else do you get the ideas and inspiration for your designs?
A: Everywhere! Tattoos, hotrods, art and so on. After designing for the last 9 years it is hard to look at anything without thinking what it might look like on a shirt.
Q: What makes L.A. different in terms of what you “do” with clothing?
A: L.A. is a DIY company. We draw the designs, make the screens, print the shirts, take the photos, run the site, ships the shirts. You name it, we do it. We really take pride in our work. Plus, we really care about our customers because they are our friends and families.
Q: Has L.A. changed the way you think of clothes? Changed the way you shop?
A: Oh man has it ever. I can’t look at a shirt without picking it apart or giving the brand praise. Plus, I don’t think I have bought a shirt in the last 5 years. The only other shirts I own are our band shirts like Tumbledown or SATORI and I even printed those so not much shopping.
Q: With Mxpx touring all over the world, has there been any interest in taking L.A. overseas?
A: MxPx is huge overseas and most of our online orders are from overseas. We are super thankful that people from all over the world have heard about L.A. and are buying our shirts and becoming part of the L.A. family.
Q: What are some of your favorite designers or brands you look up to?
A: Can’t go wrong with Sailor Jerry. Just love the old school traditional artwork. I really respect hand drawn art on shirts.
Q: Do you see L.A. expanding to include items other than screen prints?
A: Yea we would love to expand to jeans, jackets, shoes, etc. We have a few things in the works right now so it might not be too long before L.A. has a lot more to offer.
Q: Is there anything else you would like our readers to know?
A: Mike and I are very happy to see Legionnaire doing as well as it is. We started making shirts that we would wear and never thought our customers would take as much pride in Legionnaire as we do. Thank you!

We are so proud of you Joe. You are an amazing friend, dad, brother, artist and inspiration. Your clothing line is a direct representation of who you are as a person and your line like you, always comes from the heart. That is what makes your line something that people seek out and want to wear again and again. My husband has an entire closet full of shirts (from the vintage Meddy to the new LA) and he still wants every new one that you sling out.
You are the best. Truly one of the rare ones. We are lucky to have you in our family and proud to be a part of yours.
We love you!!
