Fashion: The Scoop

CONFESSION: I WANT TO BE DITA

Deep inside, I’ve always wanted to be a polished lady. I’d love to wear a hat and gloves and go to bed wearing curlers so that I wake up with perfectly polished hair. In reality, of course, my nailed are chipped, my hair is thrown up in a floppy bun and I’m currently wearing faded jeans with holes in them. But, Dita Von Teese gives me hope that maybe, one day, I too can be glamorous.

She’s the epitome of classic American beauty. Known for figure modeling and the art of burlesque, Ms. Von Teese has joined the ranks of such vintage Hollywood pin-ups as Bettie Page, Lily St. Cyr and Gypsy Rose Lee. Burlesque, the art of the tease, has made a revival–and it’s all thanks to this brunette beauty.

What’s more, she’s a lady–which, unfortunately, is almost a lost art. This self-styled vampish vixen always takes the time to put on her face, set her hair and put on a pair of heels. She has an heir of regality and sensuality that’s exaggerated, but never trashy.

When it comes to fashion, she admires vintage pieces and such designers as Dior, Dolce & Gabbana, Marc Jacobs and Vivienne Westwood.

“I started buying vintage originally because I couldn’t afford the kinds of designer clothes that appealed to me, and I saw that many of the designers I liked best were referencing the 1930s, ’40s and ’50s. So, for instance, I would see a Vivienne Westwood suit in a magazine, and then I would buy a 1940s suit and have it tailored to my corseted waist and padded hips. I always felt like a very ordinary looking girl, and I found that dressing in a unique way made me feel less ordinary and more glamorous,” says Von Teese. (Courtesy of Treehugger.com)

So, how can we be more like Dita? It all starts with a good foundation. Take an extra minute or two in the morning to put your look together.

“I want to get the message out to women that you’ll inevitably feel better if you just take a minute for yourself. I like to remind people that the day you go out looking like a full disaster is the day you’re gonna run into your ex-boyfriend or your ex-husband’s new wife or something crazy like that.” (The Daily Beast)

Also, a good lingerie combination will instantly make you feel glam and ready to stomp all over the hearts of men. Don’t save the good pieces for a special occasion; Dita encourages us to be glamorous every minute of every day. Try experimenting with her Wonderbra collection of sexy bras and panties, or slip on a garter belt with silk stockings and a paper-thin slip. Aside from your undergarments, slip on a pair of heels, the right shade of red lipstick and a Marilyn Monroe wiggle dress and, soon enough, you’ll be a saucy siren like Ms. Dita.
