Fashion: Cult Status

Louise Goldin

Louise Goldin is a renowned knitwear designer who has been successfully showing her innovative and technically-impeccable knitwear to the fashion community since her graduation from Central Saint Martins in 2005. Her inspiration seems to come from a myriad of sources, with emphasis on technology and a sci-fi world. Goldin’s view of fashion–not only as an art but as an expression of science and modernity–has greatly influenced her work as a designer.

For her FW09 collection, Goldin took a very sleek approach to her design style and created a collection of pure blacks and grays. And, for the first time, she added leather accents to her immaculate knits. Her usual fantasy, space, technology and remote sensors inspirations resulted in a robot-influenced collection–which were all about edge but with close attention to the feminine form.

Her latest SS10 collection also includes her traditional themes but with a twist. One main motif is light and feminine cascading pleats contrasted with the more sci-fi pieces like pointed bodices. Overall, this collection is far softer than fall, with pastel colors and more pieces that flow away from the body. The pristine juxtaposition between hard and soft is really what makes the collection stand out.

While Goldin’s work is visionary and innovative, her clothing fits in with the prevalent look of London street style, which combines club-chic with convenient, modern city garb; her sleek black looks perfectly complement urban streets. As London style has become a way for American fashionistas to incorporate a more avant-garde aesthetic, Louise Goldin is definitely a great go-to designer for stateside trendsetters this fall.
