Doing Good in the Neighborhood
Sunday, November 22nd, 2009
Hidden below the quiet serenity of St. Mark’s Church, The Lamb’s Underground Art Gallery (LUAG) buzzes with activity that’s reminiscent of the 1980s East Village Rivington Street art scene. At that time, a gaggle of new artists burst onto the scene welding, forging, street painting or delighting onlookers with live impromptu performances.
And with that spirit in mind, Martin Munoz has started weekly workshops that offer everyone and anyone a cozy, hassle-free space for expressing themselves through writing, doodling, painting,…whatever their hearts desire. There’s usually something to nibble on, and unlimited espresso to help ignite those creative juices. What’s more, the art supplies are free!
So, what kind of person throws open his doors and invites the world to come in and create for free? A man with a genuine love of art, a membership to an art materials reuse center (Materials for the Arts) and a passion to give back to the community. Right after graduating from Hunter College, Munoz threw himself into both his art and his passion. His work of detailed, animated, and often whimsical “life journey” collages epitomize the creative play that goes on at LUAG.
