ABC No Rio: Fraternization At Its Best

If you’re in New York, this is the place to be. ABC No Rio is a collectively run center for art and activism. Located in the heart of Manhattan’s Lower East Side, ABC No Rio thrives as a safe space for artists of all types to create. The rooting of ABC No Rio is based around the drive to cross-pollinate between artists and activists. It’s a community of passionate spirits that encourage pushing the norm, reveling in the possibility that the conventional way of life just might be a little more insane than we’re inclined to believe. ABC No Rio is full of artists, nomads, and even punks who embrace a do-it-yourself ethos, and usually, in some corner of the room, there are supermodels and rock-stars. Everyone pulling together to redefine this world and create a new world through the weaving together of various values and convictions via conversation and art.

I encourage everyone to seek out communities like ABC No Rio whether you are into fashion, art, science, sociology, or music. Such places allow for expansion in every direction. On Saturday at 3 pm, ABC No Rio will present Mischief Brew (Philly folk punk), Meisce (Seattle folk punk), Abandon (punk from Portland, formerly HELGHAST), and Futurecide (ABC No Rio punk spirit represent) in their gallery performance space on 156 Rivington Street, between Clinton & Suffolk. Their weekly SOS (Sunday Open Series) at 3pm, known for its open and spontaneous vibe of poetry and the spoken word, will also be held this weekend. There’s no sign-up, no time limit, no b.s.
