Fashion: On Trend

I Want to be Like Mike

Michael Jackson has been an inspiration for me as an aspiring designer in the fashion industry. Ever since I can remember, I was in awe of his moves, music videos and clothes. I’d be lying if I said he wasn’t a huge trendsetter among Hollywood’s greatest. People were creating fashion chaos over the infamous “Thriller” jacket and then there was the one-handed glove that even I was a victim of until a few years ago. I loved how within his wardrobe, there were no rules held against him. He wore anything in any color and made it look great. Now, after his passing away, I’ve noticed the evolution of his style conquering the fashion world like it’s 1985.

For FW09, quite a few designers showed their love for Michael Jackson by referencing him in their collection. Christophe Decarnin of Balmain went off the wall for FW09 sending girls out clad in Swarovski crystal minis and draped pants that gave you the feeling that you were in Studio 54. While Balmain was full of MJ inspired club wear, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana were more posh at D&G and had a marching band printed blouse paired with matching pants that looked like Michael Jackson walking the perimeters of the Neverland Ranch. It was exciting to see designers take inspiration from different moments of his life and work it into their FW09 collections. Michael Jackson, the one and only King of Pop, will certainly be missed, but his fashion will continue to influence and inspire others.
