Why Fight It?
Monday, August 31st, 2009
How do you do your hair on a daily basis? This is the first question I usually ask a new client. I’m a hair designer; I design cuts and colors to suit both the needs of the client and their hair. I don’t call myself a hair stylist because I don’t want to spend a half hour styling your hair, and neither should you. I want the designed color and cut to work on their own, and work for you. The reason many women spend so much time on their hair is because they want to change what they have. As the saying goes, the grass is always greener; curly-haired girls want straight hair, and vice versa. Simply put, we want what we don’t have.
Well, I for one don’t have this problem. I had straight hair until my early 20’s when, one day, it became wavy. I couldn’t have been happier! I’ve embraced the wave ever since, and have made it a goal to teach others to do the same. Most women with textured hair have the same problem–frizz, which can easily be fixed. Fighting frizz is mostly about products. Unless your hair is incredibly oily, skip the daily shampoo; shampoos strip away valuable oils the hair needs. If you’ve worked out, just rinse your hair and condition. When you do shampoo, be sure to use one formulated for curly hair, or a hydrating or sulfate-free version. There are many frizz-fighting products available at all price points. My favorites are by the Moroccan Oil and John Freida Frizz-Ease lines.
As for haircuts on curly hair, there are many schools of thought. Some hair stylists use razors, while others would never dare. Some believe in lots of layers, while some believe in fewer, longer layers. What you need depends on the type of curls you have, as well as the thickness and texture of your hair. Curly, wavy and textured hair can be such an issue for its owners, books have been written about it and hair designers are forced to discover methods and products for dealing with curly hair.
So, back away from the hair dryer and flat iron and embrace your texture. Why fight it? Scrunch in some product and go. I have converted countless women from straightening every day to never straightening again. Talk to your hair designer and try it. Your hair will thank you, and you will certainly thank your hair designer for making your life easier and for allowing you to love your hair.
