Fall Runway Hair Trends

Sleek, slicked, voluminous, crimped, pinned and textured are accurate descriptions of hair styles seen on the FW09 runways. Styles were up, down, ponied and bunned, and we saw a return to both pretty and wearable hair. While not every trend on the runway can be translated to everyday, some are certainly suitable and others serve as style inspiration.

Hair trends for FW09:

1. Deep side part, as seen at Hermes, Donna Karan, Jil Sander and Alessandro Dell’Acqua. This is definitely a style one can wear easily. While Hermes, Donna Karan and Jil Sander showed the style sleek and straight, Alessandro Dell Acqua went with waves a la Veronica Lake.

    2. Sleek, as seen at Armani, Jil Sander, Hermes, Gucci, who had some height happening, Donna Karan, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Christian Lacroix and Badgley Mischka.  Jil Sander and Armani opted for simple chignons, while Philip Lim requested shiny, Vidal Sassoon-style wigs(inspired by model Tao Okamoto).

    3. Volume. This season, the ’80s reigned supreme from head to toe. There was MAJOR volume at Gucci, Gaultier, Marc Jacobs and Chloe. Ladies, get out your hairspray!

    4. Big waves. The prettiest and most wearable takes on the trend were seen at Diane von Furstenberg, Chloe and Alessandro Dell’Acqua, while Anna Sui showed the look softer and tousled.

    5. Crimped. Another ode to the ’80s.  Yes, crimping is back. We can thank Givenchy and Lagerfeld for the return of totally awesome, rad hair.

    6. Embellished with pins. One of the newest and most interesting trends, as seen at Dior and Carolina Herrera, stylists stepped outside of the box and incorporated bobby pins as accessories.

Don’t be bashful; try something new.  The FW09 runways displayed some of the most wearable hair I’ve seen in a long time.  Mix it up and combine a few trends at once, like a deep side part and loose waves, or a sleek, but voluminous, pony.  It’s only hair; experiment, play and–most importantly–have fun!
